Every shell I pick up goes somewhere — in my hands, in my pockets, on my table, eventually on canvas. This one is all of them at once. I laid them out and let the composition find itself. Some I’ve had for years, some I found that morning. Scallops mostly — there’s something about the way they fan out, the way the ridges catch light differently at each angle. The amber, the rust, the ones that have gone almost silver from sitting in the sun too long. I paint shells because I can’t stop collecting them. Maybe this painting is why.
